Sweet and sour Osaka Expo!
Did you see the news in last week’s newspaper that “there are still zero construction applications for overseas pavilions” and fear of Osaka Expo not being able to open in time’?
That’s right. It’s a pretty serious situation.
There are multiple reasons behind this situation, and if you are interested in hearing why, please contact me so we can talk directly (confidentially).
However, if we just linger on the gossip and naysaying, it may relieve the stress, but it won’t lead to the success of the Expo, so I would like to concentrate on positive thinking and on what can still be done to save the Expo.
The timeframe available for design, building department approval, ordering materials, and construction before the opening in April 2025 is only 20 months.
Even miracle happen here and there, only SOME of the 48 countries’ free-standing pavilions (TYPE A) will be completed.
Let’s say only 20 countries become a reality. The Osaka Expo will remain in history records as a failure.
But… let me draw iacopo`s magic wand here!✨
For example, what would it be like if, after the Expo is terminated in October 2025, ALL! of the 20 pavilions, instead of being bulldozed, were to be relocated to various regions in Japan?
In this case, the Osaka Expo would remain in the records as the most sustainable event in the history of Expo\(^o^)/
Yes, it’s such a waste to have steel frames that can last over 100 years, elevators and escalators that can last over 30 years, air conditioners and equipment that can last over 20 years be scrapped after six months!
Even though authorities are lascivious in the use of SdG’s, badges and stickers, in 99% of cases it is just a superficial story. . .
After all, if the pavillions are demolished, they become trash.
And trash is trash, even if you recycle it it is still recycled trash.
Let`s not try to hide our face behind the finger…
However, if buildings are reused, they can be truly sustainable.
Besides being eco-friendly, there are many other benefits:
1) Revitalize Japanese provinces with languishing economies!
2) Create opportunities for international exchange such as sister city projects etc.!
3) Become the core feature of economic and cultural projects!
4) Become a symbol and gathering place for the activities of foreign companies of that country, active in Japan!
5) Through pavilion “adoption,” Japanese rural provinces can create a channel for opening business ventures and collaborations in foreign countries.
6) Most importantly: the legacy project can be publicized in advance,
during the Expo, boosting the visibility of the Japanese “host location” in front of millions of visitors during the six-month period, promoting cooperation and implementing SDGs agenda concretely.
All of the pavilions that we are currently working on are matched with local companies or local governments and are designed with consideration for the new location.
I would like also to match pavilions that are handled by other architects and construction companies and implement a strategy to have ALL foreign pavilions remain somewhere in Japan semi-permanently.
