pavilions for world expo

Expo is about celebrating "the differences".
Differences do not divide, quite the opposite: they enrich and inspire.
Only when a different culture or common sense is not explained misunderstanding and conflicts may happen.
A foreigh language is so only until the moment it is decyphered. From this point of view, Expo`s mission to celebrate the differences is not only fun, but may be considered as one of the most powerful peace promoting activity on the planet!

bridge between cultures

In Expo as a "bridge", the cultures are connected, not flattened, the particularities are evidenciated, not hidden.
At studio dodici, taking advance of our international DNA and experience we strive to "bridge" international clients with local constrcution companies and consultants for stress-free, World-class results.

Designing a pavilion for a World Expo is a high-profile architectural and cultural challenge. The design must balance innovation, functionality, storytelling, and national or organizational identity.
Here are the key points to consider:

デザイン

a strong and authentic concept

1. Theme Alignment Interpret the Expo Theme: Ensure the pavilion concept resonates with the official Expo theme (e.g., “Designing Future Society for Our Lives” for Expo 2025). Narrative Integration: The design should tell a story, ideally through architecture, exhibits, and visitor journey.

2. Cultural Representation National Identity: Showcase culture, heritage, innovation, and values of the country or organization. Contemporary Expression: Go beyond clichés—present cultural elements in a modern, engaging way. International Audience: Communicate ideas clearly across cultures. Inclusive Design: Avoid political or religious symbols that may be controversial or divisive.

3. Visitor Experience Immersive Journey: Create a memorable, sensory-rich experience using sound, light, materials, interaction, and storytelling. Wayfinding and Flow: Ensure intuitive navigation and efficient crowd management. Accessibility: Design for people of all ages and abilities (ADA compliant or equivalent).

4. Program and Functionality Zoning: Include exhibition space, waiting zones, VIP lounges, retail areas, cafés, restrooms, and staff/service areas. Flexibility: Allow for different uses throughout the Expo (e.g., day/night programs, live events).

5. Innovation and Technology Showcase Cutting-Edge Tech: Integrate digital, interactive, or AI-based exhibits that engage visitors meaningfully. Smart Building Systems: Utilize sensors, responsive lighting, and climate controls where appropriate.

6. Architectural Expression Iconic Form: Aim for a striking and unique design that stands out among hundreds of pavilions. Local Materials and Methods: Where feasible, use vernacular techniques adapted in a modern context. Buildability and Timeline: Design with construction constraints and the Expo’s deadline in mind.

7. Budget Management Cost vs Impact: Maximize visual and experiential impact within financial constraints. Sponsorship Opportunities: Design flexibility for branding or commercial partnerships without overwhelming the pavilion’s core message.

8. Sustainability Eco-Friendly Design: Use green materials, energy-efficient systems, passive cooling/heating, and possibly renewable energy sources. Post-Expo Life: Consider reuse, relocation, or recyclability of materials after the Expo.

beyond architecture

9. AV and technology Let`s be honest, not all visitors come to EXPO only to see the architecture. Led walls, projection mapping, inclusive experiences are the "main course" of the event. We place utmost care in considering the technical spaces and requirements of the AV technologies from the beginning of the project, including considerations about leased Vs. purchased equipment, electric requirements, maintenance issues, no-system-down and backup technologies. To reach this result, we coordinate and work in close contacts with the consultants and AV engineers for a seamless integration.

10. Media and Public Relations Photogenic and Shareable: We design with social media in mind—iconic angles, Instagrammable moments. Message Clarity: We ensure that key messages are easy to grasp even in brief visits.
